The Seashore Centre Marine Education and Conservation

Torbay's Marine World is a hidden jewel. At The Seashore Centre, run by Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust we are trying to unlock the box to reveal this great jewel. The Bay has 16 marine sites of national importance, including Saltern Cove, designated an underwater Local Nature Reserve and the only local underwater Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Descend beneath the waves and in the sheltered waters of Tor Bay, you will find a nationally important species, seagrass, covering an area equivalent to over 100 football pitches and sheltering two different species of seahorse. You will see dolphins and basking sharks that visit our coast; and in Torbay’s marine caves you will find the rare carpet coral and many other unusual species. Through work by volunteers and by Trust staff, our records are increasing every day and we are slowly starting to understand the marine environment of our Bay as well as the complexities of its conservation.

It is very difficult to truly appreciate Torbay’s marine environment unless you are a scuba diver so part of the Trust’s work is to bring our marine world to life through a varied events programme, talks and school trips. The Seashore Centre is open to the public during the Summer school holidays.

Our aim is to promote the need and importance of marine conservation at a local level but also at a global level, through education and awareness of the local marine environment.
