Micro-commissions for artists in North Kirklees

Micro-commissions for artists in North Kirklees

#heART YOUR TOWN

Phase 2 of heART Your Town aims to deliver projects with artists who live in the towns of Mirfield, Ravensthorpe, Heckmondwike or Cleckheaton to create art installations, window displays and temporary sculptures in the summer of 2021.

This project aims to be a celebratory, creative, life-affirming event which connects with a diverse range of people in North Kirklees. It will demonstrate the positive impact the arts can have in times of difficulty. Mindful of current and any future restrictions and challenges presented by the COVID 19 pandemic, it will present temporary public artworks which welcome residents and visitors back to our town centres. In addition to supporting artists whose livelihoods have been affected by the impact of COVID 19, the project will aim to be part of the wider economic recovery in the area. It will seek to highlight local creatives, independent retailers, cultural resources and local landmarks

Proposals are invited from self-employed professional artists living or working in North Kirklees. Applications are welcome from all artists, including those from artists from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.

West Yorkshire Print Workshop will work in partnership with artists based in the towns to develop art installations, window displays and temporary sculptures with the local community and businesses in Mirfield, Ravensthorpe, Cleckheaton and Heckmondwike.

The installations will be open for public view during July and August 2021 and we are looking to commission projects from artists using a variety of approaches and materials, including sculpture, temporary murals, banners, light/digital mapping projections, textiles, text, performance, etc. We are looking for accessible, vibrant artworks which might include, for example, positive messages or local history, and which uplift neglected or run-down sites. We are keen that some of the proposals have an engagement with the local community (school, community group, business) where people contribute to the design of the artwork.

There are 3 different types of commission envisaged: 4 x £2000; 4 x £1000; 2 x £500

Please email martyn@wypw.org for an artist brief. Deadline for proposals is 24th April 2021.
