I am keen to keep the old time acoustic blues alive. I learn new songs by trying to recreate the guitar and vocal parts accurately. But once I am playing the whole song, I think it becomes my version, warts and all and I then stay with that interpretation and don't worry about it varying from the original. Some of my favourites in my repertoire include: Drunken Hearted Man (Robert Johnson), Special Baby Blues (based on RJ's 32-20 Blues with some original words), Key to the Highway (Bill Broonzy), Hey Hey (Bill Broonzy), Hellhound on my Trail (Robert Johnson), Buckets of Rain (Bob Dylan), Goodbye Porkpie Hat (Charlie Mingus & Rahsaan Roland Kirk), Going up the Country (Henry Thomas / Al Wilson), Keep it Hid (Dan Auerbach), Handyman Blues (C W Stoneking) ... and more! So quite a variety. My definition of blues is quite wide as you can see from the above, so I hope that my performances don't have too many songs sounding the same. When available, I play some songs with additional flute or whistle (Marianne McLeod Hill or Barry Smith). I used to play in a duo (and latterly band with John Goodwin on clarinet & Ewen McLeod Hill on keyboards) with ace guitarist Richard S Johnston, but unfortunately he has now moved out of the area.
