Introducing...5x5

INTRODUCING… five Sussex artists who will talk about their work for 5 minutes each in Pecha Kucha style presentations.

The evening provides an opportunity for the five presenters to brush up on their presentation skills, and a chance for artists to get to know each other a bit better and explore the breadth and diversity of artistic practice in the region. The talks will be followed by time for discussion, chat and a glass of wine.

Our five artists this month are Maggie Henton, Clive Whitburn, Alexandra Valy,
Louise Evans and Angela Smith.

Maggie Henton

Maggie Henton's practice is principally concerned with an enquiry into quality of place, with the ways in which place is constructed and inhabited. Much of her work over the last decade has focused on residencies and contexts in which she has been invited to respond to a specific location. These have ranged from remote landscapes to museums and domestic spaces. Responses to the particularities of these very different sites have included video, installation, photography, large scale wall drawings, print and drawing series.

Angela Smith

Angela Smith studied Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton and graduated in 2008. Her paintings often contain figurative elements, but don’t aim to illustrate reality. Instead they are a response to veiled, obscured and disguised feelings. Central to her practice is the exposure and concealment of vulnerability.

Angela paints primarily in enamel and gloss, often poured on to the canvas which is then tilted to create sinuous shapes. Forms emerge and paint is layered to create a lustrous shine and intensity of colour. Surface is important varying from an impenetrable flat sheen to sags, wrinkles and furrows.
Angela’s work can currently be seen in 20 Painters at Phoenix Brighton until 30 March.

Clive Whitburn

Clive Whitburn is a musician and composer. Beginning with a London University degree in music, teaching and composition, Clive's music was performed in theatres throughout England, including Sadler’s Wells, and commissioned for a BBC radio play. Then a gap: a career in education, and being a Dad...

In the last decade Clive has picked up the threads of his music career, first performing in pub and festival gigs with “5th Quarter” and “Loggerheads”, then joining Brighton Festival Chorus, singing with major orchestras under great conductors including at the BBC Proms and eventually returning to composition.

With an interest in cross-disciplinary collaboration, Clive is keen to develop working relationships with artists. He will premiere recent compositions in his Voices & Strings concert at The Underground Theatre, Eastbourne in May.

Alexandra Valy

Alexandra Valy studied at Camberwell College of Art (Foundation), Middlesex University (BA Fine Art), Byam Shaw School of Art (PgDip Fine Art) and Goldsmiths College (MFA Fine Art, year one). Her work spans disciplines, from sculpture and installation to video, stop-motion animation, photography and light projections. She has exhibited in London and nationally, including the Liverpool Biennial, Deptford X and a solo show at the No:ID gallery. After 18 years in London, she recently moved to Eastbourne where she now lives and works. She is currently working on several art initiatives under the umbrella Curious Projects: a space for making and thinking.

Louise Evans
Louise Evans graduated from the University of Brighton last year with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art: Critical Practice. Her practice focuses on identity and (auto)biographical narratives, examining evidence that we leave behind and how the reading of it changes over time.
Although Louise works in a variety of media, she is drawn towards photography and often uses found, appropriated imagery to manipulate and reconstruct meanings.
Louise really enjoys the contrast between the introspective nature of her practice and exhibiting work. She will be showing work in Telling Stories #2 exhibition at the Kaleidoscope Gallery, Sevenoaks, in April/May.
