Background: The Cooper Gallery extension is a flagship project for Barnsley as one its key cultural assets in the borough. The garden is a new space within the site and the commission has been funded through a combination of ACE and S106 monies. This project is part of a programme of four art in the public realm projects taking place in 2016 which reflect on the proud people of Barnsley and key events in the history of the community.

Artists are invited to submit proposals for original artworks and an integrated landscape treatment for this high profile gallery in Barnsley. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the gallery at a critical point in its development and add to the artistic legacy of Barnsley. This commission also offers scope for artists to consider the whole space, not just an artwork in isolation, with consideration and treatment of the whole garden area.

Budget: The budget for the commission is expected to be around £40,000 – this will be confirmed in relation to a number of contingencies still under consideration.
