Mural artist, Leeds University Union

Mural artist, Leeds University Union

Leeds University Union is a charity that helps over 34,000 students to love their time at Leeds. Located at the heart of the University of Leeds campus, the Union is a fantastic space for students to meet, make new friends and get involved in student life.

In 1976, refugees from Chile painted a community mural in Leeds University Union building. Lost for many years, recent refurbishment work has uncovered the mural. Working with members of the Chilean community in Yorkshire and student volunteers, and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, this project seeks to restore the mural, develop new interpretation and engage the local community in the history of refugees.

LUU is now seeking an experienced freelance mural artist to repaint damaged areas of the mural, while sensitively acknowledging and preserving the history of this important work. Applicants must have proven experience of mural painting, preferably with experience of restoration work. A knowledge of the history and context of political murals, particularly in Chile, would be an advantage.

This post is offered on a freelance basis, and artists must provide their own insurance. Up to 10 days work is offered. The work must be completed by the end of January 2018. The artist must be able to use ladders as part of mural is at ceiling height. A budget for materials will be provided.

To apply please send a CV including images of recent work, and a statement outlining relevant experience, suitability for the post and your day rate to Mags McLeary m.mcleary@luu.org.uk by Wednesday 3rd January.

Interviews will take place week beginning Monday 8th January.
