Streets of Colour - wall painting on canal path in Huddersfield

Streets of Colour - wall painting on canal path in Huddersfield

A wall along a canal path in Huddersfield has been given an uplift with a painting by artist Jo Peel. The canal path connects the University Campus, Aspley Marina, The Aspley & Premier Inn and Top Spot Snooker Club and was in need of a bit of TLC.

The project came about following the Innovation and Creative Exchange (ICE) Challenge at the University of Huddersfield, where students from multiple schools and disciplines responded to a challenge about the vibrancy in the town. Students pitched ideas to a panel of Senior Managers from the Council and University and local Councillors, with the ambition that winning ideas would be realised in some way. One of the winning ideas was about adding a mural to an underpass to celebrate Huddersfield and the Creative Economy Team worked with students and artist Jo Peel to make this element of the project happen

Students worked with Jo Peel to research ideas and identified the canal underpass as somewhere that needed some attention. Jo painted the wall over 6 days with some help from the students and you can see the result by walking along the underpass which goes under Wakefield Road between Aspley Marina and the University of Huddersfield. You can also watch a video taken by Jo Peel going through the canal on a boat http://bit.ly/StreetsOfColourVideo
