Divertimento String Quartet

Music for May Day begins with Mozart’s mature String Quartet K 499 in D, which was written for his publisher friend Franz Hoffmeister. This is followed by Shostakovich’s String Quartet no 1 which is brief and most atmospheric. He described the work.. ‘I visualised childhood scenes, somewhat naïve and bright moods associated with spring’.
The Czech composer Bedrich Smetana’s Quartet no 1 ‘From My Life’ reflects aspects of his life, from the joy of falling in love, the grief of losing his beloved daughter, and the gradual onset of deafness.
