Call for Music Creators: Australian Art Orchestra residency

Call for Music Creators: Australian Art Orchestra residency

hcmf// is looking for four UK-based musicians to participate in a residency and collaboration with Australian Art Orchestra (AAO). Over a three day ‘satellite intensive’ in Huddersfield, our chosen artists will work with visiting members of the AAO, developing pieces that celebrate different traditions, cultures and approaches to making music. The project will culminate in a performance of these collectively developed works with the AAO in June 2022.

About the Australian Art Orchestra

Led by renowned trumpeter Peter Knight, the Australian Art Orchestra (AAO) is currently in its third decade of activity. With a reputation for using improvisation as a bridge between music languages, they have developed a process that emphasises creative spontaneity, taking individual ideas and bringing them into collective collaboration. The AAO are interested in exploring cultural meeting points, and exchanging musical worlds, aiming to reflect the diversity of 21st century Australia through their projects.

For each of the last eight years the AAO has run an annual two-week residency – the Creative Music Intensive – in the remote southern Australian state of Tasmania. During this residency, musicians have the chance to collaborate and share ideas with artists from around the world under the mentorship of AAO faculty. This shared space has seen artists forge new friendships and artistic relationships. Recent projects have included Hand to Earth, an exploration of ancient and contemporary music by indigenous songmen David and Daniel Wilfred.

About the residency:

In June 2022, and for the first time, the AAO will collaborate with hcmf// on a satellite residency in Huddersfield, bringing their collaborative season to us and providing a creative space for four selected UK-based musicians.

The AAO’s roster of players, which will include David and Daniel Wilfred, will develop new works with the selected participants, echoing the spirit of creative exchange found at the AAO’s Creative Music Intensive in Tasmania.

This residency will be held over three days from Tuesday 14 June to Thursday 16 June. It will culminate in a performance on the evening of Thursday 16 June, where participants will join AAO in presenting their newly developed works.

This is a paid opportunity. Participants will receive £150 per day, and will also have their travel and accommodation costs covered. Selected through an open call, proposals will be reviewed by a panel including hcmf// Artistic Director Graham McKenzie and AAO leader Peter Knight.

For this residency, we are seeking UK-based artists with experience of creating, developing or leading on their own music project.
