Free hcmf// concert: Australian Art Orchestra
Date: Thursday 16 June
Time: 7pm
Venue: DAI Hall, Huddersfield, HD1 2QF (Website)
This event is FREE to attend and you do not need to book a ticket in advance.
On Thursday 16 June, join us as we premiere new music from members of the Australian Art Orchestra and a selection of collaborating improvisers and composers. In a free concert at Huddersfield’s DAI Hall art space, we’ll be hosting the AAO, one of the world’s most renowned experimental music groups, as they visit Huddersfield for the very first time.
The AAO is currently in its third decade of activity, continuing to make new connections with improvisers and experimental artists around the world. They’re visiting Huddersfield with the first overseas edition of Creative Music Intensive, a collaborative residency in which they bring new artists into the ensemble’s fold, inviting them to work on new music as part of the collective.
Produced in collaboration with UK-Australia, the AAO’s residency involves brainstorming musical ideas with six artists, including Cath Roberts and Mandhira de Saram, alongside four musicians selected from an open call: Alex Ives, Megan Steinberg, Seth Bennett and Bell Lungs. They’ll be joined by David and Daniel Wilfred, who recently released Hand to Earth, a record made with the AAO, exploring the forty-thousand year old song traditions of South East Arnhem Land in Australia. These artists will be exchanging their sound worlds with the AAO, and making new music with them in the process.
This concert is open to all for free. We’ll be kicking things off on Thursday 16 June at 7pm. Join us then to find out what three days burrowed away with the AAO sounds like.
