Passion and Triumph: de Falla, Rodrigo, Beethoven

Passion and Triumph: de Falla, Rodrigo, Beethoven

Our resident orchestra makes their triumphant return to the Weston Auditorium for a new season of unforgettable performances!

Our first half has a sunny Spanish flavour, fitting for the early autumn season, as we open with the lively Ritual Fire Dance by Manuel de Falla. This energetic movement from a ballet score depicts people leaping through a fire whilst worshipping the fire god.

Also featured is the passionate and ever-popular Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo, inspired by the sounds of nature in the gardens at the Royal Palace of Aranjuez. Interestingly, Rodrigo was a pianist, not a guitarist, yet he crafted one of the most cherished works in classical guitar music. The orchestra is pleased to welcome classical guitarist Samrat Majumder to join them on stage to perform this evocative piece.

Beethoven’s Eroica forms the second half of our concert. This work is widely considered to be the first romantic symphony for its bold break from the traditions and conventions of the previous Classical era. Originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, whom Beethoven admired as a heroic figure, the dedication was fiercely withdrawn after Napoleon declared himself Emperor. Despite receiving mixed reviews initially due to its groundbreaking style, it is now firmly established as one of the most beloved symphonies in the classical repertoire.

We look forward to welcoming you to this atmospheric concert to kickstart our new season!
