Sat 17 November 2018
£10 - Artist talk/Performance
Venue: Huddersfield Art Gallery
Visual Score: Liz K Miller
Performers: Kim Macari & Ryoko Akama
1pm - 3.30pm
We are excited to welcome artist Liz K Miller for this one-off collaborative event, which runs alongside her solo exhibition, entitled ‘The Circular Scores’, at the Huddersfield Art Gallery (10 November 2018 – 2 February 2019). Liz was the winner of the 2017 West Yorkshire Print Workshop Flourish Award for Excellence in Printmaking in 2017, for which she was awarded the prize of a solo exhibition at Huddersfield Art Gallery.
Circular Score is a musical notation system that explores the seductiveness of cycles and repetitive patterns to the human condition. Through this work, Liz K Miller investigates how repetition is ingrained in our psyche, how it seeps into our being and is made manifest in our behaviour and our creations. The score will be performed and re-interpreted in a collaborative event with trumpeter Kim Macari and sound artist Ryoko Akama. The talk will describe the ideas and process behind the printed Circular Scores and the performance will illuminate and extend the cyclical process of re-scoring, re-interpreting and re-creating.
Kim Macari is a musician and composer immersed in the jazz and improvised music scene. Whether as a performer, teacher or producer, her passion lies in the strength of improvised music as a means of expression and a form of empowerment and freedom. Kim is drawn to Liz’s work as it relates to her fascination with ekphrasis and artistic intent. These works function as both the representation of another piece of art as well as the catalyst for new art, while also being art objects themselves. Although Kim will work with the pieces beforehand, she will enter the performance space without any planned material: the music she plays will be both the process and result.
Ryoko Akama is a sound artist, composer and performer, who approaches quiet temporal/spatial experiences that magnify silence, time and space. Her works employ small and fragile objects such as paper balloons and glass bottles, creating tiny occurrences that embody ‘almost nothing’ aesthetics. She also composes text scores and performs a diversity of alternative scores in collaboration with international artists.
