Mark Hearld, Raucous Invention: The Joy of Making
Raucous Invention: The Joy of Making is an ambitious, bold, vibrant, and creative journey where Mark Hearld is exploring connections through collaboration and risk taking to ensure this show is filled with exciting, and challenging works never seen before. Working from his studio in York, Hearld work tirelessly to create fresh works but equally values the joy and inspiration which comes from collaboration with like-minded makers and organisations. This show is a celebration of all these things.
Alongside a number of special collaborations, Hearld will create 60-70 new works which includes, collages, lino cut prints, screen prints, letter press prints, and a large scale mural.
The mural will comprise of a series of A1 sized individual one-off collages, each siting as a solo piece, but when placed together, make an incredible one-off work which will fill the walls of the Visitor Centre Restaurant.
We’re thrilled the show will include a very special collaboration where we’re building on Leach Pottery's international reputation as one of the most respected and influential potteries in the world. Hearld has been working alongside their lead potter, Roelof Uys, drawing on the historic reputation of Bernard Leach who played a crucial pioneering role in creating an identity for artist potters across the world. Leach Pottery have created a series of hand-built platters which Hearld has decorated using paper stencils, slips and mark making whilst the clay was wet, later decorating the surface using important glaze recipes from both Bernard Leach and studio potter, Svend Bayer. This collaboration will culminate in a small number of exclusive, unique platters being offered for sale during the show.
Hearld is again pushing boundaries to produce a series of primitive styled, 3 dimensional laser cut steel works, depicting animal forms, reminiscent of iconic imagery created by the likes of Picasso and Breon O’Casey. Hearld’s creations mark a departure in his work; moving away from 2-dimensional imagery to works which capture the form as well as the surface of creatures seen in nature.
An exclusive, limited edition range of products are being developed for this show including a collection of stunning wall hanging, woven jacquard tapestries, each one featuring the iconic work of Hearld, alongside, a bespoke ceramic edition of tankards, decorated by Hearld, and created in collaboration with the potteries at Stoke-On-Trent.
A publication is planned to coincide with this show, documenting Hearld’s creative journey through 2021, including the process and collaborative approach Hearld goes through to produce the new body of work for YSP. Published by Random Spectacular, an imprint of St. Jude’s; Hearld’s long time collaborators.
Recent commissions include original artworks for Sarah Burton, Creative Director of Alexander McQueen, fashion fabric designs for Caramel women’s and children’s wear brand and 10 large original artworks for Charlie Bigham’s HQ.
